and dry hay hollered its long smell as time seemed less quick
to pull the wool over blinkered eyes
and there are always signs to realise
and not always are the silences blind
then thick rain honoured allotments
turned in blankets
kittens hid under lorries to bask in oil slicks
and tarmacs cooled
and plants survived
and a tiny child ducked inside
and all it was was being alive
